The internet was not available in 1982 to the general public. It is believed the US Military begun the use of a form of internet in the late 60s. It began to penetrate into mainstream use in the late 80s, first in Asia. So unless involved with specific military use, no availability was present.

When the internet was first made, it was used by scientists, and university professors. Now it is used by the general public so there is more spam, pornography, and chat. Connections were much slower and you had to dial into an internet line. Connections were also much more expensive and charged by the minute.
