The forerunner of the "Kamikaze" was created around 1974 by a bartender named Liam, who worked at the Eliot Lounge (now closed) in downtown Boston. Liam added a little triple sec to a lot of vodka, then splashed in a few drops of Rose's Lime Juice and shook the drink. He originally served his new cocktail in a beer mug. He named it after himself, calling it a "Liam".

The Eliot Lounge was a popular spot for runners, the press and the spectators of the Boston Marathon. Someone from Smirnoff Vodka must have been drinking at Liam's bar because several years later his drink was featured in an advertisement for Smirnoff. They had changed the name, calling it a "Kamikaze."
