Half dollars are still being minted, but only in small quantities.

Adoption of the Kennedy design and the decision to keep minting the coins out of (reduced-quality) silver up till 1969 caused the coins to be hoarded. When the Mint finally saw the light of reason and switched to cupronickel it was too late. Lots of people think the newer coins are valuable (they're not!) simply because the old ones were. As a result they don't circulate, so very few stores and vending machines are set up to take them, which means people don't spend them, which means very few stores and vending machines ...
