Harold, having fought and won one battle against arival claimant for the Throne in the North of England had to march the remains of his Army, some 5000 men 200miles South to meet another rival, William of Normandy. Out numbered 3-1 his main hope was to fight a defensive battle and let the superior numbers of William exhaust themselves on his effective shield wall. William's Bretons attacking Harolds left flank, could take no more of the futile slaughter and retreated. The English left their defensive line to pursue them, big mistake. The Normans took advantage of this lapse in the disciplined English ranks. The rest, as they say, is history.
