When the first park land was set aside by the US government, it was "for public use, resort, and recreation." This was federal land that was given to California for park use and later was incorporated into Yosemite National Park.

The first National Park was Yellowstone, and its purpose was the same, but the reasons for establishing it included many things, such as backing from the Northern Pacific Railroad, which wanted to sell rail tickets to tourists.
