Outbreaks of the Black Death are mainly dependent on migration patterns of the insect, rodent, and human carriers. Each country may be stricken a dozen times and gaps between each outbreak can go between 3 and 50 years. The plague strikes overpopulated and starved settlements and wanes when they are too thin, whether by death or quarantine, to infect new hosts.
