The first "pulpit" was used in the Roman Catholic Church in the late 6th to early 7th century when it became a replacement for the ambo which is the seat which the priests read the liturgy from. It did not become common until the mid ninth century though as a fixture in the building of Cathedrals. Before the Roman Catholic Church, most Christian religious groups met in small buildings and homes where they sat in a circle (or U shape) with the speaker sitting in the center of the group. This reflects the traditional layout of the synagogues of the late first century B.C. and first century A.D.
