The "grim reaper" is a purely English expression, so that term goes back only about 1000 years. However, the idea of personifying death traces back to the oldest writings of man (about 5 to 6000 years ago) and is included in all the old cultures, so the idea probably predates writing (that is, pre-history). Lots of religions gave him his due, and creation stories usually have him show up right at the beginning of creation.

As far as I know, the reaper was demonstrated in tests in 1831 and was patented by McCormick in 1834.
