Although the dates of its construction and completion are not absolutely verified, the head of the Great Sphinx is believed to be that of Khafra (also Khafre) who lived around 2500 BC, when building was likely begun. Other scholars suggest that his father Khufu or brother Djedefre may have begun the Sphinx during their reigns.

There is a theory, based solely on the condition of the stone used in the Sphinx, that at least part of the structure is much older, by as much as several thousand years, dating to African inhabitants who preceded the Egyptians. On more than one occasion, practically all of the Sphinx had been buried by drifting sand.
