Who was the 6th first lady?

The wife of the 6th president was Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams. I am not sure you would call her the 6th first lady, since the 3rd president did not have a wife when he lived in the White House and the term "first lady" was not commonly used for the president's wife until several years later.

When did flotus begin to be used?

FLOTUS, meaning the First Lady of the United States, was probably first used publicly in 1983 by Donnie Radcliffe of the Washington Post who wrote that the secret service use POTUS and FLOTUS to refer to the President and the first lady. POTUS was first used to designate a telephone line in the West Wing's Cabinet room, between President Nixon and his Cheif of Staff H.R. Haldeman in 1969. Then POTUS disappeared for a while and was made popular again in a 1977 White House Novel, "Full Disclosure," as a pet name adopted by the unmarried president's paramour photographer. She felt calling him Mr. President was too formal given their intimate relationship, but calling him by his first name didn't seem exactly appropriate either, so she settled on POTUS.

Who coined the term first lady?

Toni L. Russell, the daughter of Leon C. and Lela (Ervin) Russell, born December 15, 1968, Corsicana Texas, first inquired to used the term "First Lady" in regards to her Pastor's Wife, Berdie Johnson who was married to the church's pastor, Elder A.Z. Johnson. The church was called Johnson Memorial Church of God in Christ. Toni, a sixth grader, had had her fill of the term "pastor's wife", as it did not justify her vision of the true manner that embodied her Pastor's Wife. Toni inquired the services of the church missionary, Ima Lois Lampkin, a high school math teacher, to petition the Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.) Headquarters to ask permission. She was thrilled to hear the term used in the Pastor and Wife Anniversary a few months later. After being approved, Sister Rosie Williams, a member of the church, called Sister Berdie the first lady, as she was speaking on the wife of the pastor at the Pastor's Anniversary. Sister Williams looked at the child when she first used it, as it had never been used ever before in that capacity. The child silently acknowledge that headquarters had given permission and after the service spoke with her mother that it had been approved.Today churches all over America now use the term without knowing that it originated from the mind of a small girl, who simply desired to call her Pastor's Wife, the only name at her disposal that reflected her Pastor's Wife spirit. The term "first lady" typically refers to the wife of the head of state or the president in a country. The term can also extend to other female relatives or partners of heads of state in certain contexts.

How many second ladies were there?

Actually, this is a very interesting question. The use of "Second Lady" to describe the wife of the Vice President is relatively recent; we see it used for the first time to apply to Richard Nixon's wife Pat, when Nixon was the VP for President Eisenhower in the 1950s. But it was not a very commonly used term, and still is not anywhere nearly as common as "First Lady," referring to the president's wife. (And in fact, the term "first lady" did not come into common use till the early 1900s.) So, if you are asking how many wives of vice presidents there were, there have been 47 vice-presidents; but not all of them were married while in office, and further, as noted previously, the term "Second Lady" was rarely used by the media to describe them.

In common usage, Mrs. Obama is referred to as the "First Lady" and the entire family is called the "First Family." Referring to the "first lady" and "first family" is a relatively new usage. The press did not call the wives and families of early presidents like George Washington or Abraham Lincoln by these terms. But by the late 1890s, the custom of referring to the "First Lady of the Land" could be seen in newspapers and popular magazines; the term "first family" came about several decades after that.
