This term is often used in describing ancient civilizations. It meant that land for hunting and grazing cattle for example was owned by members of a village. There were no so-called private property rights. When speaking of more "modern" societies, this common ownership can be used to describe socialism. However, for the most part, common ownership is not a term used very often for socialism, it is mainly used for describing past civilizations.
