The current design of the Union Jack dates from 1801 as decreed by George lll following the union of Great Britain and Ireland. The origins of the flag date back to 1606, the Crowns of England, Ireland and Scotland were united. Designs from the individual countries were incorporated in a personal union
King James VI of Scotland was crowned the king of England, making him the king of both countrys, for a while both countrys used their own flags (St.Georges Cross, St.Andrews Cross)
However, because the two countrys were now unified, and the navys of each respective country joined together, confusion grew over which flag would be flown. So in 1606 King James issued a proclamation that basically said everybody in this Kingdom Of Great Britain shall use the crosses entertwined, this was then published and the flag because known as the 'Union Flag'. Although the first design is lost, it is pressumed that the current flag was how it was then. Then when Ireland became part of Great Britain, the blue was added in from the Irish 'St.Patricks' flag and further added to the union jack.
Hope this answers your question :) sorry if its too long!
