Indoor Volleyball - 1964
Beach Volleyball - 1992 as a demonstration sport, 1996 as a medal sport.
The game of Volleyball was invented in the year 1895 by a YMCA (Young Men Christian Association) physical education director called William G Morgan. The exact date is said to be the 9th of February that year. The game was created in the city of Holyoke, Massachusetts. What is noteworthy is that just four years ago another instructor of the YMCA founded the game of Basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts; not far from here. The game was later called volleyball after an observer at an exhibition match remarked on the peculiar volley nature of this game. It was in 1896 and the observer was one Alfred Halstead. It had become a game that was supposed to be less violent and rough than basketball. It was adopted by Canada, the first other country after the United States, by the 1900s. Later in 1924 it became part of the Olympics
Volleyball was adapted into an Olympic Sport in 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris.
The Americans were playing Volleyball to demonstrate what was Volleyball in 1924.
After FIVB (Federation International De Volleyball) was established the Olympics decided to hold a special tournament to test out this new theory. The tournament was a "Round Robin" which means everyone will play each other in the tournament. The competition was successful.
Then Volleyball was officially recognized as an Olympic Sport in the 1964 Olympic Games.
