Sound is a variation in air pressure, within the range of hearing of the subject. Bats do better at higher frequencies, and elephants do better than us at infrasonic frequencies. Sound is a subjective phenomenon - as is that part of it we call 'noise'. But sound does require a physical medium for its propagation - sound will not travel in a vacuum.
Pleasant sounds are those which make us feel happy, comfortable, or evoke positive emotions:ocean wavesmusic (different types, depending on the individual's taste)babbling brookfireplace cracklingchildren's laughterUnpleasant sounds are those which make us cringe, plug our ears, or evoke negative emotions. Examples:cryingdrilling/constructiontraffic/honkingsomething that might be startling, such as thunder, a glass breaking, or a sirenfireworks
Sound is nothing more than a vibration which moves within a matter (it moves in air while you are speaking, for instance) It is not possible for us to hear sounds in space, which is obvious.
To answer this question, you need to know a little about human ear anatomy. In the ear we have the Basalar membrane that is a fluid like substance in the cochlea. As sound travels through the cochlea the memrane vibrates and causes waves. As the membrane moves it presses up against another membrane called the tectoral membrane that in turn is next to hair fibers. As the membranes moves it presses down on the hair fibers and we hear sound. The greater amplitude of the wave the louder the noise because the membrane is pressing hard against those hair fibers. This is the reason why continuous loud noise is not good for your hearing because those hair fibers can break. Once those hair fibers are not sending the correct signal to the brain, you can have hearing loss.

This is the term used to describe the hearing that remains after a hearing loss occurs. Most people with significant hearing loss still have some residual hearing that can be stimulated by amplifying sound using a hearing aid. . www.medel.com.ar/ENG/US/50_Resources/010_glossary.asp
