Pounds, Shillings and Pence were not introduced as an established currency, the various components were introduced over a period of time. The Pound as a unit of the British currency first appeared about 1725 with the introduction of paper money printed on only one side. The Shilling made its debut in about 1550, but had been previously known as a Testoon since the late 1400's. The Penny is thought to have been around since about 785 AD, possibly earlier.

Decimal currency was officially introduced in Britain on "Decimal Day" the 15th of February, 1971, with the Half New Penny, 1 New Penny and 2 New Pence coins being issued. The 5 and 10 New Pence coins had been introduced much earlier in April, 1968, and the 50 New Pence coins were introduced in October, 1969. The new currency consisting of 100 Pence to the Pound replaced the old currency of Pounds, Shillings and Pence. 12 Pence to the Shilling, and 20 Shillings to the Pound.

The first stage of the conversion to decimal currency commenced in 1968 with the introduction of the 5 and 10 New Pence coins, with the 50 New Pence coin introduced in 1969. The official date of the changeover was the 15th of February, 1971, when the remainder of the coins were introduced. There were 100 New Pence in a Pound.
