Whilst there were many endeavours to create an 'air plane' the first recognised successful designers of a heavier-than-air aeroplane were the Wright Brothers, who successfully kept their motorised air frame aloft for twelve seconds on December 17th, 1903.
Brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright first successfully flew glider planes in 1900 and began working on a motorised version of the aeroplane. This was at Kitty Hawk North Carolina.
Nobody knows that. All of the inventors are dead, and some of their notebooks are lost. Different people came up with the idea of an aeroplane at different times, and in different countries. Some models worked, some didn't. There is even argument about who's model actually flew first. Nobody can say with certainty that "This Person" had the original idea in year "XXXX", let alone know what TIME of year the idea sprang up.
The Wright brothers owned a bicycle shop, I think, in Illinois.. They used their knowledge of machinary to make the first airplane. They went to the Outer Banks of North Carolina due to the high winds and drafts and flew for the first time.
The first controlled flight in what we know now as an airplane was on December 14, 1903 flown by Orville Wright who was airborne for 12 seconds
The idea of air travel has been around since as early as the 17th century. In 1846 Sir George Cayley designed the first airplane.
Modern fixed-wing airplanes were designed in 1799.

Amelia did not invent airplanes, she loved flying and created many records of long and unusual flights. However all her adventures were in aircraft she bought or that were owned by benefactors.
