Women wanted to vote in order to have a say in decisions that affected their lives, to have a voice in politics and governance, and to ensure that their perspectives and interests were represented in the democratic process.

The effect of the Representation of the People Act was that the vote was given to all men over 21 and all women over 30 who were on the local government register or married to men who were. 22% of women were excluded. It meant that women made up 39.6% of the electorate and allowed women to become more politically involved.
