In 1885 Dr. C. Edmund Kells hired a female to replace his male assistant. He wanted the lady assistant to be " quiet, gental, quick, and attentive." Although many dentists were unsure about a female assistant the public quickly approved. This allowed many women to be able to go the office without having to be accompanied by either the husband or the maiden aunt.
