As women's liberation flourished in the 1920s, and hemlines diminished, hosiery that covered the legs was available as stockings for women. These were sheer and made from silk or an artificial silk fabric called rayon.
Du Pont invented nylon in 1938 , and so around 1940, stockings were made from Nylon and sometimes referred to as 'Nylons'
Then came Pantyhose…
Allen Gant Sr. from the Raven Knitting Mills developed a commercial equivalent to these stockings and hose in 1953. He named them named "Panti-Legs" but these were not available until about 1959. Around the same time, a Mr Ernest Rice created a a similar design for pantyhose. These are similar to the pantyhose of today. It was in 1956 that Ernest G. Rice applied for a patent called "Combination Stockings and Panty".

Ah those were different times. Glen Raven Mills, created "Panti-Legs." Their product-the world's first commercial pantyhose, and available department store shelves starting in1959. It was the rise of the miniskirt (literally) in the mid-1960s that made pantyhose a household product. When your skirt was shorter than stockings are long pantyhose were the perfect fit. Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy donned their miniskirts, demand exploded and women began to change from the traditional stockings, garter belt, girdle combo to pantyhose.
