Steam tractors did not make their way into use in agriculture until the beginning of the 1800's. Steam tractors that could drive themselves had been invented around 1859, and for the next six years many more inventions and breakthroughs would be made with these machines.

'Tractor', is derived from the Latin word 'trahere' which means, 'to pull'. 'Traction' which implies having a greater torque. The 1st tractors were steam powered plowing engines, used in pairs. In 1892 John Froelich invented the 1st tractor. The oldest known self propelled vehicle is the 1769 Cugnot Steam Tractor built by Nicolas-Joesph Cugnot.
In 1868 a steam powered tractor was made, but the credit is given to John Froelick in South Dakota in 1892 with making the first successful gas powered tractor.
