They attempted to revise the Articles of Confederation at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787, but found there were too many problems with this method. They threw out the Articles completely and came up with United States' current government, based on the US Constitution.
The Articles of Confederation were actually drafted in 1777. They were not ratified, however, until four years later in 1781 as the Revolutionary War was causing an extreme delay. As an aside, in the days before the US Constitution, it was common to refer to "these United States instead of the newer version that came to be as "the United States.
The last draft of the Articles was written in the summer of 1777 and the Second Continental Congress approved them for ratification by the States on November 15, 1777.
The Articles were in place until November 1788 when the US Constitution became the law of the land.
