The very first flat screen television was also the very first television. John Logie Baird demonstrated his "Televisor" in 1925 in a London department store. The television used a rotating disc instead of liquid crystals and added a backlight behind the disc for illumination. As the disc rotated, the intensity of the light varied and so an image was drawn in the display area. After a few years, fully electronic systems replaced Baird's mechanical television and so the flat screen fell into disuse until the 1990s. His system didn't boast a high resolution and although it was a flat screen, it was still quite a deep housing. Nonetheless, it was still a flat screen and it worked. It took another half century to improve flat screen technology.
