The midrashim (plural) were put in writing over a period of about six hundred years, depending upon which Midrash one is asking about. The content of the midrashim, however, dates back many centuries before they were put into writing. For example, one midrash whose core material dates all the way back (part of the Oral Torah), is the Torat Kohanim, a halakhic midrash on Leviticus. It was put in writing shortly after the Talmud (early 6th century CE); as were the Midrash Rabbah, Sifrei, Mechilta, and others (Pirkei Rabbi Eliezer, Alphabet of Rabbi Akiva, etc).

Midrashim which were put in writing later include the Yalkut Shimoni and Yalkut Reuveini (c.11th century CE).

What major change allowed Jewish people to survive the diaspora?

For 1800 years after the Giving of the Torah, the Oral Traditions had never been put in writing; and there was even a prohibition to do so (Talmud, Gittin 59). Due to the danger of parts of the halakha (laws) being forgotten, the sages saw no choice but to permit the writing of the Oral Torah; and 1500 years ago, the Talmud and Midrashim were written down.

Where did the isrealites record there history and religious beliefs?

1) Much of history was preserved orally. Some of that was later recorded in writing in the Talmud, the midrashim and other texts, some is still transmitted orally (especially recent events), and some was lost. 2) The phrase "and the rest of his deeds are written in the chronicles of the kings" occurs many times in the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible). This indicates that they recorded the histories of the kings in a special text, which has since been lost (and is not identical with the Biblical books of Kings or Chronicles). 3) A lot of Israelite history is recorded in the Tanakh itself. However, not every event was recorded. God informed each prophet what to record and in which exact words.
