Due to racial discrimination, black servicemen were not allowed to learn to fly until 1941, when a group of black college graduates were selected for what the Army called "an experiment"-- the creation of the segregated Fighter Squadron, which trained at an airfield adjacent to Alabama's Tuskegee Institute. The experiment involved training black pilots and ground support members. The squadron, quickly dubbed the Tuskegee Airmen, was activated on March 22, 1941, and redesignated as the 99th Fighter Squadron on May 15, 1942.
Legend has it that because of their courage white bomber pilots preferred these pilots as their escort air support.
The Tuskegee airmen were a group of fighter pilots that flew in WWII. When they signed up for the flight school at Tuskegee (an all black college in the south) the U.S. Army thought of them (and all other blacks) as inferior, yet they were put through more rigorous training and discipline than their white counterparts. When they passed they were sent to the MTO (Mediterranean Theater of Operations) and flew P-51 Mustangs on fighter bomber escort missions based out of Italy. They were well decorated and very successful.
March 19 1941 the 332 fighter group and the 447 bomber group were formed as commanded by congress. The Army air group resisted by demanding much higher qualifications than other pilot candidates. The men of Tuskegee met the challenge. Over 6 times the required number of men and women qualified.
