The workhouse system underwent several administrative reforms--some of which were brought about by Charles Dickens and his fellow activists--but was not officially abolished until 1st April 1930; it was replaced by other social legislation for the unemployed and retired. Despite abolition, many workhouses continued into the 1950s under the local County Council.

Workhouses were officially abolished in Britain in 1930 with the passing of the Local Government Act. This act replaced the workhouse system with a more modern approach to social welfare, marking the end of the Poor Law system that had been in place since the 19th century.
