The ability of the South to effectively prosecute the war ended when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia on April 9, 1865. This date is frequently cited as the traditional end of the War. Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered to Union General William T. Sherman 17 days later on the twenty-sixth. Several commands were surrendered the following month ending military hostilities.
