A:The fourth-century pagan emperor known as Julian the Apostate sought to have the Jerualem Temple rebuilt, but he was killed in battle and his Christian successors reversed the policy. It seems unlikely now that the Temple can ever be rebuilt on the same site, although there seems little to prevent a temple being built on another, nearby site if the will is there. The importance of the Temple to Second-Temple Judaism was that God could only be worshipped in the Temple, and that sacrifices took place there. Rabbinic Judaism no longer holds that God can not be worshipped in other places and no longer sees the performance of animal sacrifices as essential to worship, so it is unclear whether a new temple is even needed.
