Small meteors hit the Earth every minute of each day. Larger meteors, big enough to be visible, hit the Earth several times each hour. In a "meteor shower", you may see over a hundred meteors an hour.

Really big meteors, enough to cause a lot of damage, are fairly rare, fortunately. The last REALLY big meteor landed in Siberia, 100 years ago; it caused as much damage as an atomic bomb! Fortunately, very few people lived in Siberia back then.

Well, the last meteor that impacted the earth and did noticeable damage was on 2/15/2013 (February 15, 2013) in Russia.
The last meteor shower is still on (mid-November), though the question is time-unrelated...

The Leonids appear every year, around November 18.

The website for Sky & Telescope magazine (one of the premier magazines for amateur astronomers) indicates that the Lyrid meteor shower on April 22 is the next one due. However, bright moonlight may interfere with good seeing that night.
The Quadrantid meteor shower normally occurs between January 2 and January 4. You can get advance notice of upcoming meteor showers at spaceweather.com.
Eclipses are visible, generally, only in certain locations. Meteor showers, however, affect the entire planet, and are generally a day or two long. The Perseid meteor shower is happening now, and will continue for a day or two more.

The first meteor shower of 2014 is expected to occur in May. The show that astronomers are calling a storm will occur as the Earth passes through debris left from comet 209P/linear.
