The main problem isn't fossil fuels literally "running out," but the point at which extracting them becomes too difficult and too expensive to continue using them as energy for our everyday needs. Some analysts believe that we are currently at, or have just passed, the point at which oil is economically viable going forward. The outlook for coal and natural gas is a bit better -- at least another generation or two.
