Well, it likely depended on the husband whether that would be required, because relationships are complicated and there were many decent people back then too. However, in the cases where it was an enforced requirement, women risked a lot in disobeying because they were basically property, and there weren't many options, and in some cases none, for a woman who wanted to be independent... they were expected to be subservient and obedient. So how could she leave or choose anything else when she wouldn't be able to support herself, or get any support from her family or society?
