According to Wikipedia the Free Online Encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Cross); The George Cross (GC) is the highest civil decoration of the United Kingdom, and also holds, or has held, that status in many of the other countries of the Commonwealth of Nations. The GC is the civilian counterpart of the Victoria Cross (VC) and the highest gallantry award for civilians as well as for military personnel in actions which are not in the face of the enemy or for which purely military honours would not normally be granted. The George Cross, which may be awarded posthumously, is granted in recognition of "acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger." The cross is primarily a civilian award; however the George Cross may be awarded to military personnel for gallant conduct which is not in the face of the enemy. As the Warrant states: The Cross is intended primarily for civilians and award in Our military services is to be confined to actions for which purely military Honours are not normally granted.
[I hope a contributor from the UK can add to this question] The George Cross is the highest civilian decoration that can be awarded by the United Kingdom. As of 1943, in accordance with the George Cross (Restriction of Use) Ordinance, it is unlawful to use the George Cross or an imitation of it or the words George Cross, for the purposes of trade or business without the authorisation of the Prime Minister. However, whether or not its use is restricted to other decorative uses or display is unknown by this contributor, although it would seem to follow, that only those to whom it was awarded would have the authorization to display it. The opposite of the verb to cross is not to cross. Where it means to cross (betray) someone, the opposite would be to abet, assist, or support. The opposite of cross (cranky, in bad spirits) could be cheerful, happy, or amiable.

Because if you cross animals you can end up with a really funky pet. If you cross plants it might make them prettier. But I'm not sure about that one.
If it was handled by a defender, deliberately or not, the goal would be awarded. If it was deliberate, there could be consequences for the defender, either a caution or a send off. If it was deliberately handled by an attacker, no goal would be awarded and the restart would be a direct free kick for the defense.
