Why do you not get the signal for the channel but you see the number?

Because the number you see is your tv tuning to that frequency if there is no signal than try replacing your cable ends or if needed the whole line it is cheap

Why does the channel numbers change but not the picture?

Wow. That depends on how you have your TV installed, and ytou're not giving me enough info to answer precisely. Chances are, you're on a video input but the channel selector is still working. The again, there could be something wrong with one of the circuit boards or the tuning section itself. Best bet is to check your owner's manual first before calling a TV repairman out. Chances are it's something simple and with a little effort, you should be able to figure it out.

What is the difference between AFC and AGC?

Automatic Frequency ControlAutomatic Frequency Control (AFC) applies to tuning in radio and TV receivers to keep it on frequency. It is also sometimes refereed to as Automatic Fine Tuning (ATF). The AFC circuit in the receiver device aids in reducing the tuning error of a TV tuner that is almost on proper frequency for a desired channel. In modern sets with digital tuners this feature is usually available and can't always be switched off. There are circumstances under which AFC is better switched off but in general use it is beneficial.

Why would your TV only display in black-and-white after you installed a new surround sound system?

B&W After Surround Sound InstallationAs an installer I had this happen alot. Most often it is just the tuning on the TV. Change channels up then down and it will fix it. This is because the auto tuning feature on TVs don't see the picture for a time and therefor tune to another area than where the channel is. THen the feature turns off or locks on to this new area and you only see blakc and white. Again changing cannels will fix this. The second reason this might happen is if you run the video signal thru the Surround processor and don't set the processor up right or plug the wires in backwards. Check the connections and the video settings to correct this. Every manufacturer is different so youwill need to check the book for details. You can always bypass the processor and this will tell you if it is at fault.
