No they are not something you routinely change. Just check your wires periodically for resistance in ohms. Should be around 5-7k per ft. Over time with heat in the engine compartment it may increase to where it is outside specs,on one or more wires or if boots are damaged or they start fitting loosely, then it may be time for a change. Naturally your longest wire will have the most, Just examine cap for signs of arcing. You may occasionally want to change your points if applicable if not electronic and need to check dwell with a feeler guage, but I would work on upgrading to an HEI or similar electronic, then you have less wear components to worry about and will probably have better spark since their coils are usually hotter. If you have one already and not fuel injected, consider adding an msd.

1, 8, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 2.
You may need to change your spark plugs,dist. cap and rotor and wires. My v8 did the same thing and now she is running like a dream!
start with dist cap and rotor
new dist cap, rotor , plug wires , plugs , fuel filter ,oil change , air filter

Just a left field idea but did you check the ballast resistor?
