You can conquer a phobia or a fear by facing it head-on. For instance, if you have a phobia of sharks, find a reliable place that will let you go swimming with sharks.
If they have a splint on they should not go swimming in the firstplace. If they havent been to a doctor they need to go and if they have and the doctor splint it they should be resting not swimming.

mostly sharks are on the go for food and if a shark stops swimming it is not getting oxygen for its gills but the angel shark and other sharks like that try to find a overhang of a place to hide
