When you stand up on your bathroom scale you measure your weight .But what will your scales show if stand on them in an elevator at the moment when it begins to accelerate up?

Your weight, plus the force needed to accelerate you. By Newton's Third Law, if the balance needs to push up with a certain force (to accelerate you + to sustain your weight against gravity), you push down with the same force, against the balance. If you know the acceleration and your mass, you can calculate the force required using Newton's Second Law.

∙ 8y agoYou 'weight', that is measured on the scales, is the product of your 'mass' and the acceleration due to gravity. Which is around 9.8m/s/s, depending on exactly where you are standing on earth.
When a lift moves up, the acceleration is added to that of the earth's gravity. Once the lift attains it's final speed, your weight will return to normal.
So your weight will increase, but your 'mass' will not. (at least not in the short time you are in the lift).
Your mass will only change when you eat something. :-)
