When you started your 1989 Volvo 240 DL car and drove car for a while then parked it but what would make it turn over but not start and then it starts 1 hour later?

you should check the fuel pump relay, it sounds like it is getting overheated. Replace that relay and your problem may go away. It is a lot easier to replace then the fuel pump and filter which live in the gas tank.

My best guess would be that you should check the fuel pump i don't know if yours has a external and internal but its more than likely the fuel pump my car did the same thing until the pump went out compleatly it cost me bout 100 buck to replace and some time by my dad
