They were most likely interrupted, at which point they quit the program using some method other than closing out (such as force quit). When the program was unexpectedly stopped the computer thinks an error may have occurred and saves the place where the program was. When it is restarted the program finds the old data and asks if you want to use it. If you select yes then it comes up as if it had never closed including the porn.
