When you used windows live movie maker the only option is to used DVD maker to burn photos to disc All the settings are not carried over to DVD maker eg it did not separate the photos into groups with?

No. You don't have to use the burn feature in Windows Live Movie Maker. The best way to finish your video in Live Movie Maker is by Publishing it to your computer first.
Once you have Published it to your computer, use whatever burn software you want to use.
