most common problem: your alternator died at some point and your Jeep was running off the battery until the battery died.
test the battery. if it is less than 6 volts i recommend replacing it. most 12 volt batteries cannot drop below a certain voltage without suffering permanent damage.
test the alternator. you can either remove it and check it at an auto parts store or you can start the car (provided you already got a new battery) and use a multimeter to test the battery leads. if it tests over 13 volts while running then the alternator is still good (it should be more like 14+volts) and you need to look for loose or disconnected cables from the battery to the alternator.
Your check engine light will be on and you will feel bucking or jerking while you are accelerating. You will also have an idle surging, sudden stalling of the engine, and a sudden surge in speed while driving on the highway.
When it dies, is it a sudden stall, or does it run rough, and then die? If its sudden, it is most likely a electrical problem, but if it runs rough, or dies when accelerating, it might be mechanical. Such as the fuel lines, carb, etc.
The bus stopped with a sudden jolt.
Check wiring harnesses - prone to corrosion
Check the vaccume return hose that goes over the block on top. Mine was dried out and I was losing pressure at the connection. That was causing mine to do chug.
Maybe a bad catalytic converter
If the vehicle is stopped without using the clutch , the engine will give jerks and turn off if the vehicle is in higher gear and the speed is not according to the range of the gear. Although, if the vehicle is being driven in higher gears and slight brakes are applied, no effect will be there if the vehicle's speed remains in the corresponding range. Example: if you are driving a vehicle at 90km/h in 5th gear and you bring it down to 60km/h by applying brakes without using the clutch, nothing will happen and you can continue driving by accelerating again.
