Any engine is more difficult to turn over when hot. So it is probably in need of a starter and/or battery cables which also lose conductivity when hot. Have a reputable repair place do a "current draw test" on the starter and cables.

Other reasons might be that
(1988, carb?) your choke linkage might need adjusting.
You might be getting a vapour lock as fuel vapourizes when the vehicle sits when hot.
The TAC (Thermo Air Cleaner) might be stuck open - if equipped - causing a very rich mixture. The engine would also run rough and you would smell the exhaust if this was the case.
