When a doctor presses on your belly, he is checking the size and shape of organs in your body. Up near your ribs, he checks your liver and gallbladder, your spleen and the bottom edge of your stomach (organ). In the middle between the lower ribs, he checks to see if you have pain where the esophagus empties into the top of the stomach. Next, at about the level of your belly button, on both sides he checks your kidneys. If you are a girl who has started periods, in the lower belly on both sides he feels the ovaries and in the middle your uterus. Sometimes pressing there makes you feel like you have to urinate if your bladder is full because the bladder is behind the uterus. If you are a male, the doctor would feel to make sure both testes have 'dropped', e.g. moved down into the scrotum. And on both sexes, all over the abdomen, the doctor feels for enlargements and gas in the intestines. At the bottom right side, he presses deeply to feel your appendix and to test for pain associated with appendicitis.
None of these times of pressing into your belly should ever cause bruises. If you do bruise that easily, you should tell your doctor so he can test your blood for any problems.
