The first recorded person of Jewish ancestry to arrive in Texas was José da Porta, a Portugues born Jewish merchant who funded the expedition of French pirate Louis-Michel Aury to Galveston in 1816. He remained there with the pirate until 1817 then relocated to Matagorda Bay, Texas, and back to New Orleans in 1820.
