Carthusians do not have monasteries, they are hermits. They have "Charterhouses" which are buildings containing a large collections of individual hermitages. In each cell lives a hermit. The cells are mostly two stories containing everything the hermit needs to live, including a stove, an altar, a bed, etc. St. Bruno started the order in 1084 in Chartreuse, France, one of the only monastic orders in the Roman Catholic NOT based on the Rule of St. Benedict.
