Black-cotton soil,which is also called Regur, is found in the Deccan Lava Plateau, the Malwa Plateau, and interior of Gujarat. It is a soil type formed by the breakdown of basaltic rock (volcanic rock or lava) and is highly fertile.
It is common in Maharashtra, western parts of Madhya Pradesh, parts of Andhra pradesh, parts of Gujarat, and some parts of Tamil Nadu.

Cotton needs a soil texture that drains well and will not upset nutrient balances. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services reports that cotton prefers a lighter, sandier soil that is not particularly high in organic matter content. Soil organics add nutrients to soils, and soils with marginal to low sand content are usually very moist soils. Any soil that will hold water and nutrients enough to support it. Typically, cotton does best on well drained soils, which typically have a coarser texture (ie. sand). However cotton is grown everywhere from the light sands of South GA to heavy clays in Tennessee.
