If you want to look at maps of ancient Rome, the city itself, or of the entire empire, your best bet would to go to your public library. If your library does not have an atlas of ancient Rome, the librarian can help you to perhaps get one on loan from another library. There are numerous sites on the web with maps of the city itself and the entire empire, but I have found them to be inferior as most of them are in sections and difficult to get a picture of the empire as a whole. The maps on the web that do show the entire empire, too, often do not have place names or else the place names are so small that they're impossible to read. In this case, a library source, with a real book in your hands is a better choice than the web, at least in my opinion.
It is in Italy. In many Roman maps Rome is placed in the very centre as they considered the city to be the centre of the world.
They used maps and navigated by the stars, sun and moon.
Your best resource to see a map of ancient Rome would be your local public library. If your library does not have an atlas of ancient Rome, the librarian can get you one on loan from another library. You can also type in "ancient Rome/maps" on your web browser and you'll come up with many sites. The problem with the web maps is that they vary. Some will give you a map of the city of Rome itself, others give you the entire empire at different times. Some have place names, others do not, and they are usually too small to comfortably read.
