If you are interested in getting involved in activities that allow for public speaking I can think of two possible solutions:
1. get involved in your school's and/or local theatre. Performing is a fantastic way to learn how to gain confidence speaking in front of others, polish your speaking skills, and have fun! You also get to tell some fantastic stories in theatre.
2. if you are still in school see if a speech and debate (also called Forensics) team exists. Speech and debate has acting/speaking events and debate, and it is a competitive activity. Teams are usually tight-knit, you meet many friendly people from other schools, and you will get an intensive study in public speaking/performing. Many people who want to become better public speakers, but only want to focus on speech delivery and not theatre-like storytelling, get involved in speech and debate.
