Where can you find a plum?

I believe they are grown in regions in the American south west around the Salton Sea. I saw an episode on the travel channel where they were growing these. They are probably grown in other areas of the world as well but I am not sure where else.

There are wild plum trees in Florida, and the cultivars will grow, but their fruit production will not be optimal. If the land owner just wants them for the spring flowers and summer shade, then he'll have a good tree. Even here in Georgia, my plum trees are beautiful, but they produce small, bad tasting fruit, and as they age even less fruit appears.

Plums may have been one of the first fruits to be domesticated by humans and there are two species - the hexaploid European plum and the diploid Japanese plum. They are found around the world, but do best where the weather is between USDA Hardiness Zone 3-10 depending on the variety. What is important is that they get 800 chilling hours in order to set fruit, and that there is not a late freeze that kills the young fruit.
