I believe they are grown in regions in the American south west around the Salton Sea. I saw an episode on the travel channel where they were growing these. They are probably grown in other areas of the world as well but I am not sure where else.
There are wild plum trees in Florida, and the cultivars will grow, but their fruit production will not be optimal. If the land owner just wants them for the spring flowers and summer shade, then he'll have a good tree.
