In 2009, approximately 35000 sombreros were made. (This number only includes factory made sombreros) There has been a steady decrease in the sales and manufacturing of sombreros due to the fact that it is no longer a staple in Mexican fashion but used predominantly for traditional purposes. Although, in 1987 sombrero sales almost tripled those sold in 1986 and 1988. This sudden boom in the sombrero industry is believed to be caused by the release of the movie Three Amigos starring Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short. The movie was released in December of 1986 and inspired a world wide sombrero craze.
