Not sure what type you have but, I have a DL station wagon and the fuel filter is located under the hood on the drivers side by the strut tower.
I have a 94 summit wagon lx and the cannister fuel filter is under the air filter and hose assembly.
You'd be thinking of a Volvo station wagon.

At the bottom of the Air-filter Box, if memory serves me correctly. The air intake to the engine connects to the lid of the Air-filter Box. On non-turbo models this is located at the front, right-hand side of the Engine Bay. However, on Turbo models its on the left.

On my 1994 Volvo 940 Station wagon there are two. My 2.3 is a turbo model, and was told they installed two, one in the tank, accessible behind and under the rear bench seat, and the other mid body next to the fuel filter.
It is located with the fuel pump under the drivers side of the car. It rests on a plate that also has the fuel pump attached to it. Undo the bolts holding the plate to the bottom of the car and you will see that it is very easy to replace.
I believe there is one at the fuel pickup in the pump...

Its located to the left of the radiator. Its a plastic square box at the end of the air intake hose to the carburator. It is held on by two self locking snaps that you need to pull out to release the front foor to the filter. Remove the door and you will see it sitting snuggly inside the box.
