put the top up It's probably the rain rail. This is a strip of rubber and plastic attached to the rear bottom edge of the soft top. You can't see it because it is below the point where the soft top and the body panels meet - just forward of the trunk lid. Its job is to collect water that runs down the back of the top and direct it to drain holes that are located in the body just in back of each door. What usually happens: - The plastic portion is thin polystyrene. After about 5 years is cracks and starts to leak. This is made worse if leaves have slid down the top and gotten in there. - You can buy a replacement rain rail from Moss motors (miatamania.com) for about $125. Replacing it is a headache, but not terribly difficult. Figure on about 5 hours if you are reasonably handy with tools; and you will need a friend to help. Get a shop manual to tell you how. The Miata Enthusiast's Shop Manual is excellent. You can get it from flyinmiata.com Before you buy the rain rail, make sure the drains are not plugged. The shop manual will tell you where they are. It's possible this is the cause of your problem, but in my experience not likely.

First, check to make sure your trunk seal is in good condition. It is looks okay, you might have a bad rain rail. The rain rail is the piece that connects your soft top to the back of your car. You can check it by pulling back the carpet on your deck lid. You will see that the rain rail is attached around the top of the deck lid with a series of bolts. Have someone pour water on the back of your top while looking at the rain rail where it attaches. If it leaks, there is your problem. A bad rain rail can cause water to leak into the trunk and also onto the deck lid. You may also find water from the deck lid flowing down to the foot well areas. Another possible is your battery sweating. If your Miata Battery is in the process of dying it sweats - quite a lot. I replaced my trunk seal for $70.00 first, still had lots of water in my trunk. Finally my battery died, I replaced it and the water stopped!

How do you unplug rain rails on your 1995 Mazda miata?
It's probably not the rain rail (a "U" channel that runs the length of the top's fastening point from door to door) that's plugged up, but rather the side drains which the rain rail dumps into, that commonly get clogged with debris. You need to partly pull back the top deck carpeting corners behind the seats. (best to use a flat prybar to remove the trim buttons) Once the carpet is pulled away, with the top in the up position, and the seats moved all the way forward, and backrest folded full forward, you can look down behind the seatbelt towers and see where the water is collected and drained. Sticking something semi-flexible down the (relatively large) drain holes easily clears the clogs. I usually use a piece of 12 guage wire
